Google reviews: how to use them to sell more

Somebody types your business name into Google. Before they read a word on your website, they see the stars. That's often the moment they decide whether to keep looking or pick up the phone.

Reviews aren't just feedback anymore. They're a sales tool sitting in plain view, working for you (or against you) all day, every day. The good news is you don't need hundreds of them to see a difference. A handful of honest, recent, specific reviews can shift a stranger's opinion of you faster than anything you could write about yourself.

Why reviews sell better than ads

When you say your business is great, that's marketing. When a customer says it, that's proof. People trust other people, especially strangers with no reason to lie, far more than they trust a business talking about itself.

This matters most for local businesses. Someone choosing a plumber, a hairdresser, or a restaurant is often deciding between several options that look similar on paper. Reviews are the tiebreaker. A shop with 40 recent five-star reviews beats one with none, even if the second one is just as good.

Ask at the right moment

Most happy customers won't leave a review unless you ask. It's not that they don't care. They just forget, or don't think of it. Asking is not pushy. It's normal, and most people are happy to help if you make it easy.

The best moment to ask is right after you've delivered something good: right after the haircut looks great, right after the meal was enjoyed, right after the job is finished and paid for. That's when goodwill is highest.

A simple text or email with a direct link works better than a vague request. Say something like: "Glad you're happy with the result! If you have a minute, a Google review would really help us out." Then include the link. Fewer clicks means more reviews.

Make it easy to leave one

Friction kills good intentions. If someone has to search for your business, find the right listing, then figure out how to leave a review, many will give up halfway.

Get your direct Google review link (you can generate one from your Google Business Profile) and put it everywhere: in a text after the job, on a printed card at checkout, in your email signature, on a little sign near the till. The less thinking required, the more reviews you'll get.

Respond to every review, good or bad

A thank-you to a five-star review takes ten seconds and shows future customers that you're attentive and appreciative. Skip this and you're leaving free goodwill on the table.

Bad reviews matter even more. How you respond says more about your business than the complaint itself. Stay calm, acknowledge the issue, offer to fix it, and take it offline if needed. A thoughtful reply to a one-star review can actually build more trust than a wall of perfect ones, because it shows you're honest and you handle problems well.

Never argue in public, never get defensive. Future customers reading the thread will judge your reaction, not just the original complaint.

Put your best reviews to work on your website

Once you've got good reviews sitting on Google, don't let them stay there alone. Pull a few of the best ones onto your homepage or a dedicated testimonials section. Real names, real words, specific details, they carry weight anywhere they're placed.

A visitor who lands on your site from a Google search, a social media link, or a friend's recommendation may never scroll down to check your Google profile. If your best reviews are already visible on your site, you've saved them the trip and made the decision easier.
